Hogan and Strode topple top 10 doubles team

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas’ No. 14-ranked men’s tennis doubles team of Blake Strode and Matt Hogan won its first match of the spring on Saturday, beating No. 10 Alexey Tsyrenov and Tim Puetz, 8-5, on the second day of the Auburn Spring Classic in Auburn, Ala.“We played some really great tennis today,” head Arkansas coach Robert Cox said. “Our doubles continues to play well, with Blake and Matt getting a win over a high caliber team like Tsyrenov and Puetz.”

The Hogs also picked up a doubles win from the duo of Tyler Tarnasky and Bradwin Williams who came from behind to take down Milan Krnjetin and Alex Petropoulos in a close match, 9-8(4). Taylor King and partner Chris Nott were not as fortunate, falling 8-3 to Auburn’s No. 19 team, Lukas Marsoun and Alex Stamchey.

On the singles court, Arkansas played hard but struggled to find victories, winning two matches on the day from their most seasoned veteran and their newest addition. Senior Strode, ranked No. 15 in singles, easily won over No. 48 Tsyrenov 6-1, 6-3 and Nikolas Zogaj, who joined the Hogs in December, handled Powell Porter in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

The remaining Hogs found day two to be encouraging yet frustrating. Hogan fought through three sets against Puetz before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 and Chris Nott played in the longest match of the day, a three hour, three minute marathon with Marsoun before succumbing in the third set tiebreak and losing 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4).

“Nott, Strode and Hogan played extremely good tennis, as did the rest of the team,” Cox said. “Zogaj got his first win as a Razorback today as well, which is huge. From here we will work to improve as we look to the rest of the season.”

Others playing singles for Arkansas on Saturday included Dmitry Lebedev who fell to Stamchev, 6-4, 6-4 and King who lost to Petropoulos in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Williams, facing Krnjetin, was defeated in similar fashion to King, losing 6-2, 6-4.

On Sunday the Hogs close out the Auburn Spring Classic against Virginia Tech at 9 a.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. For complete coverage of Razorbacks men’s tennis, log onto ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
