FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas got a double-double performance from Dionisio Gomez and the Razorbacks had a 22-rebound advantage over a bigger Midwest All-Stars team in posting a 71-47 exhibition game victory in Bud Walton Arena on Saturday.

Gomez, a senior forward, had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, and Arkansas had a 59-37 rebounding edge. The Razorbacks outscored Midwest 16-8 on second-chance points.

UA shot just 35.1 percent for the game, but held the All-Stars to 24.6 percent, including 20 percent in the first half. Arkansas also forced 20 turnovers, scoring 26 points off those miscues.

“We needed a good test and I thought we got a good test tonight,” head coach Stan Heath said. “I thought we did a great job of rebounding and attacking the glass. We went plus-22 against big guys. I was really pleased with Dionisio Gomez and his double-double. Mike Jones gave us a spark and a lift, and Carl (Baker) rebounded well too.

Midwest cut a 10-point deficit to eight twice in the second half, but Kendrick Davis hit a running jumper and Michael Jones made a three-pointer to push the lead back to 13. Midwest got within nine with 10:31 to play, but Blake Eddins hit a three and Gomez made a layup following an Eric Ferguson free throw to push the margin to 52-37 with 9:24 remaining.

Ferguson, a freshman point guard, had another solid outing. He hit eight of 14 shots and finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Jones also had another solid outing with 12 points and four rebounds. Ferguson had 28 points and Jones 14 in a 77-73 exhibition game victory over Athletes in Action on Nov. 6.

Greg Grays led Midwest with 15 points while Roy Jones scored 12.

Jonathon Modica added seven points for UA while Davis and Alonzo Lane scored six each. Baker had four points and nine rebounds with five boards coming on the offensive end, and Rashard Sullivan added seven rebounds with five on offense.

Arkansas opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:35 p.m. at home against Jackson State.
