Hogs Forge On Through Chilly Conditions

Arkansas Spring Final Results

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The third-ranked Arkansas men’s track and field team capped its outdoor opener in Fayetteville with several strong performances on the final day of competition at the Arkansas Spring Invitational.

While the weather was much improved from day one the Razorbacks still had to contend with sharp cross winds and chilly temperatures in addition to regional foes.

Junior multi Derek Jacobus pushed through all of the mother nature’s obstacles and came out rewarded. Opening day two at No. 2 in the decathlon standings Jacobus propelled into the top spot with a 6-foot PR in the javelin throw which he followed up with a 4 minute, 30.99 second performance in the 1,500-meter run. He finished as the top collegiate performer with a final score of 7,437 points, one-point shy of tying teammate Brad Culp’s meet record.

Arkansas also pulled in meet titles in two relays led by All-American duo Kenzo Cotton and Josh Washington. Fresh off the indoor national meet Cotton and Washington teamed up with Obi Igbokwe and Eric Janise to set a new meet record in the 4-x-200-meter relay (1:21.99). The pair then joined Rhayko Schwartz and Kemar Mowatt to close out the weekend with a victory in the 4-x-400 (3:12.66).

ProHogs Jarrion Lawson, Zach Riley, Wallace Spearmon Jr. and Marqueze Washington captured the 4-x-100 relay title in 39.77 the quartet also placed second in the 4-x-200 edged out by the aforementioned Razorback squad.

Arkansas heads to California next weekend to compete at the Stanford Invitational. The meet is one of three road tests for the Hogs before they return to Fayetteville on April 21-22 for the John McDonnell Invitational.

Chris Bucknam Sounds Off

On Arkansas’ overall performance
“We’ve cycled back into a pretty tough training period so our athletes were already tired coming in [to the Arkansas Spring Invite], so a lot of credit for those guys who got out there and raced. It’s going to be a rough month in that regard. We’ve got a lot of work to do before the championships season but again I’m proud of the athletes who battled the elements and got some work in.”

On Derek Jacobus in the Decathlon
“The highlight of the meet was Derek Jacobus’ personal best in the decathlon. That performance would have got him into the national championships last year. It’s a high level effort by Derek. He’s been battling injuries throughout the indoor season so it’s good to see him out there healthy. He’s such an outstanding competitor and I’m happy for him especially under these conditions.”

On the relays
“I thought the sprint group did an outstanding job all the way across the board. They were all out there today running the 4-x-1, 4-x-2 and 4-x-4 all afternoon from 3. to 8:30 p.m. Just continue to be impressed with those guys and kind of effort they put in each and every day.”
