Hogs Jump to Second Place after Gaining 24 Poi

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In the last event of the day, the University of Arkansas track and field squad scored 24 points in the 3,000-meter run to jump into second place in the team standings at the SEC Championships at the Nutter Field House on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Ky.
The Razorbacks will look to grab their 21st conference indoor title and 66th conference title in school history when the two-day meet concludes on Sunday afternoon.
In a day were most of the races run were preliminary heats except for the 3,000 meters, the Hogs had five runners finish in the top 8 to add to the Razorback point totals.
“The 3,000-meters was a great race for us,” UA head coach John McDonnell said. “Those 24 points will give us a big boost going into tomorrow. (Murray) Link and (Daniel) Lincoln did an outstanding job getting out and setting the pace early. My goal was to score 23 points in that race so that extra point really is a bonus. That one point could turn out to be crucial. This really gets the team excited for tomorrow.”
Early into the 3,000-meter race, Hogs’ senior Sharif Karie, senior Murray Link and sophomore Daniel Lincoln joined by Alabama’s David Kimani broke away from the pack early with Lincoln and Link setting the pace early on. Kimani and Karie soon took over and battled it out in the end with Karie battled the former NCAA cross country champion to the end finishing in second by only .07 seconds. Both Kimani and Karie broke the old Nutter Field House facility record.
“That race was great,” Karie said. “Of course, I wanted to win but finishing only .07 of a second behind him was good for me. He is one of the best collegiate runners in the nation right now. The track was kind of hard and the conditions were not so great inside the facility.”
Combing with the 19 points from the Hogs finishing with Karie in second (8:03.97), Link in third (8:06.97) and Lincoln in fourth (8:07.70), the Hogs gained the remaining five points from senior Ryan Travis’ fifth-place finish (8:13.10) and senior Alan Duneavy’s eighth-place finish (8:25.16).
Karie and Kimani will get their first chance for a rematch on Sunday when the two will battle it out in the mile. Karie and Kimani turned in the top two qualifying times in the prelims for the mile with Travis close behind in third place.
The Hogs scored their only other points early in the day when sophomore long jumper Richard Smith finished in fourth place leaping 24-9.00.
Kevin Baker continued his streak of tying or bettering the school record in the 60-meter dash when for the third meet in a row he beat his previous best time. Baker’s 6.74 in the 60-meter dash sets the new school record and was good enough to qualify Baker for the finals on Sunday.
The Hogs will look for more points on Sunday with three runners competing in the 800-meter dash. Freshman Dirk Heinze, in only his second meet for the Hogs, won his heat on Saturday in 1:51.01 to advance to the finals. Joining him will be another freshman Chris Mulvaney and senior Andy Beasley who also advanced with times of 1:50.89 and 1:50.94, respectively.
Also advancing to the finals on Sunday was junior sprinter Sam Glover who ran the 400-meter dash in 47.86 in the prelims.
Action concludes on Sunday and the Razorbacks will look to score big points from their competitors in the 5,000-meter run including Lincoln and Link, Kenny Evans in the high jump and several jumpers in the triple jump.
