FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks will begin their defense of the national cross country title on Sept. 8 but have already been selected No. 1 in the Mondo NCAA-I Men’s Cross Country Pre-Season Top 25 which was announced on Wednesday. The poll is voted on by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.
“We are very flattered,” UA Head Cross Country Coach John McDonnell said. “We are a young team even though we have four or five good guys returning from last year. We have a very talented group to battle for the spots every week.”
The Hogs, who will be looking to claim their third consecutive and 11th overall national championship, received eight first place votes. Stanford also received eight first place votes and was ranked second in the poll. Wisconsin, which finished second at the 1999 NCAA Championships, came in at No. 6.
The only other Southeastern Conference school to rank in the top 25 was Alabama in 19th place.
The Razorbacks begin the 2000 season by hosting the Arkansas Invitational on Sept. 8 at the Razorback Cross Country Course, the UA men’s squad is slated to run at 6:30 p.m. against Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Oklahoma.
