HILO, Hawaii – Chris Walker averaged 14 points per game to earn all-tournament honors as Arkansas placed third last weekend at the Big Island Invitational.
After a 71-54 win over Mercer in Friday’s opening round, the Razorbacks (3-1) bounced back from a 77-71 semifinal loss to Iowa State on Saturday with a 79-60 victory over Santa Clara in Sunday’s third-place game.
Jason Gilbert’s career-high 17 points led a group of six Razorbacks who scored in double figures in the win over Santa Clara. Fifteen of Gilbert’s 17 points came from three-point range as the sophomore guard shot 5-of-13 from beyond the arc, adding a pair of free throws. T.J. Cleveland added 13 points while Brandon Davis, Alonzo Lane, Charles Tatum and Walker scored 10 points each. Nathan Fast led Santa Clara with 17 points.
Kantrail Horton’s 18 points led four Cyclones in double digits as Iowa State outlasted a late charge from the Hogs for a second-round victory despite 21 points by Walker. Free throws proved the difference down the stretch with ISU going 14-of-18 from the line in the game to compared the Razorbacks’ 9-of-18.
In the Hogs’ opening-round win over Mercer, Arkansas held the Bears to just 34 percent shooting from the floor in a 71-54 Razorback victory. Walker led all scorers with 12 points while Dionisio Gomez collected a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Razorbacks return to Fayetteville early Tuesday and will face Jackson State at 2:05 p.m. CT Saturday at Bud Walton Arena.
