Hogs Remain on Top in SEC Quadrangle

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In the final meet of University of Arkansas Tennis and Track Center, the tradition ended the same way it began with Arkansas on top. The Hogs qualified eight different athletes in nine events Friday evening.
Junior All-American Kenny Evans highlighted the meet with a jump of 7’04.5″ to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held in Fayetteville, Mar. 10-11.
“I wanted to try to get an automatic qualifier early as I could in the season, so it would not be something that I would not be worrying about,” Evans said. “It worked out that I got the automatic qualifier. I really didn’t know what to expect, because I had sprained my ankle earlier in the season and I didn’t know how sore I was going to be.”
Arkansas started the meet quickly with junior All-American Marcus Clavelle provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with a throw of 60’01.5″.
“I didn’t really have a good meet,” Clavelle said. “I had a bad throw that was the one that I looking for but I missed that and I ended up scratching. I feel pretty good, and I’m going to go into next week with a lot of confidence.”
Junior All-American Murray Link led the pack in the mile with a time of 4:10.26.
“We basically ran the race that we wanted to run,” Link said. “We wanted to race fast in the first 1200 meters and then just hang on till the end of the race. It worked really well.”
With the Hogs’ nine NCAA qualifiers the Hogs will continue to look for others to step up.
“I was happy with them,” head coach John McDonnell said. “We had some young guys that did really well. You expect guys like Melvin Lister and Kenny Evans to do what they are supposed to do. Even the guys that didn’t qualify looked really sharp.”
The Hogs will travel to Joplin, Mo. next weekend to participate in the Missouri Southern Invitational.
