FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – With a win on Saturday, the Arkansas Razorback men’s tennis team got back on track. They won handily in a 6-1 match over Drake University.

Troubled by doubles so far this season head coach Robert Cox tweaked his line up hoping to find a winning combination. It worked this weak as he replaced Adrians Zguns with Talley Parker to team with Aleksey Bubis at number two doubles.

Bubis and Parker quickly set the tone of the match for the day. They were the first ones off the court with an 8-5 win over Felipe Montenegro and Matt McClure. Matt Roberts and Rohan Gajjar would clinch the doubles point for the Hogs – their first of the year – with a 9-7 win over Jonathan Tishler and Navneesh Sharma. The number one doubles match didn’t have as good an outcome as Anthony Perkins and Kirk Schuler defeated the Arkansas duo of Nathan Price and Eduardo Pacheco.

Head coach Robert Cox was obviously pleased with the day’s results. “It is a lot nicer to be on this side of the match after losing to Northwestern last week,” Cox said. “I’m just proud of the guys and proud of our doubles team. You have to give a lot of credit to Talley Parker for stepping up today and helping to set the tone of the entire day. He went out there and played really well with Aleksey [Bubis]. This was his first match of the year and you can’t ask for much more than that. “We played a good team in Drake today and we got on top and didn’t let up. Now we have to look forward to next weekend against Southwest Missouri and then on Sunday we open SEC play when we host Vanderbilt.”

The Hogs were in a good position going into singles play with a 1-0 lead. It seemed that was all they needed as singles took care of itself with the Hogs winning five of the six matches.

The freshmen would go to work for the Hogs as all three picked up wins to clinch the win for the Hogs. Zguns made quick work of Drake’s Tishler at number four singles with a 6-0, 6-0 rout to make the score 2-0 Arkansas. Gajjar gave the Hogs a point with a win over McClure, 6-1, 6-3, and Matt Roberts would win his match, 6-2, 6-1 to clinch for the Hogs.

Up 4-0, the Razorbacks continued to play solid as Bubis knocked off Montenegro and Pacheco knocked off Schuler to put the Hogs up 6-0.

It looked like the Hogs could possibly sweep with Price down a set, 6-3, and coming back to tie in the second at 4-4. He couldn’t hold on as Perkins was too strong for Price and got the win, 6-3, 6-4 and gave Drake a point to make the final, 6-1.

The Razorbacks play their next match on Friday, Feb. 7 with a noon start against Southwest Missouri State. They open SEC play on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Noon against Vanderbilt.
