FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Fifty-ninth ranked Arkansas (6-9, 2-4 SEC) had a tough time overcoming the doubles point loss in a 5-2 loss to Memphis Tuesday afternoon.

“Just when you think that you take a few steps forward, we take a step back,” head coach Robert Cox said. “We have to learn to overcome losing the doubles point.”

The freshman duo of Aleksey Bubis and Eduardo Pacheco were the only doubles team to pick up a victory. They were down 5-2 before rallying back for the 8-6 win.

The No. 1 doubles match lasted an hour and a half before the team of Alistar Todd and Ben Stapp won on two big serves in the tiebreak over Arkansas’ John Deaton and Henrik Tofft.

In singles, eighth-ranked Oskar Johansson easily defeated Richard Magney in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Junior Henrik Tofft, who is ranked 88th by the International Tennis Association, suffered only his fifth loss of the season to Daniel Demacek 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

The Tigers were able to capitalize in middle of their order winning the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles.

The longest match of the afternoon was between Arkansas senior Chris Campbell and junior Jack Hu of Memphis. Campbell dominated the first set 6-1 before dropping the second set 2-6. Hu served to finish the final set 6-4.

Pacheco was able to come up with the 7-5, 6-4 win over Chris Buckley at the No. 6 singles.

Arkansas will travel to South Carolina for its ninth Southeastern Conference match. The match is March 31 and will begin at 2 p.m. CST
