Hogs begin home stretch

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 75 University of Arkansas men’s tennis team will play Kentucky and Vanderbilt this weekend as they begin their stretch of three away matches to complete conference play.

Last weekend the Hogs finished up their final round of home matches against Auburn and Alabama, and celebrated their three seniors on senior day. Although they were defeated 4-3 by Alabama and 5-2 by Auburn, Chris Nott, Mike Ward and Nikolas Zogaj all came away with wins after the weekend.

On Tuesday, the Razorbacks played Oral Roberts for the second time this season, and came away with their second win against the Golden Eagles. The 5-2 victory boosted the Hog’s record to 7-13 overall, and gave Manfred Jeske, Michael Nott, Taj Harrison and Matt Walters singles wins during the match.

"I am looking forward to returning back to SEC play," said head coach Robert Cox. "We have been improving each and every match."

Friday the Hogs will travel to Lexington to play No. 12 Kentucky at 2 p.m. The Wildcats include four ranked singles players and two doubles teams. Eric Quigley is No. 7, Alex Musialek is No. 51, Alberto Gonzalez is No. 100 and Anthony Rossi is No. 104. Gonzalez paired with Tom Jomby make up the No. 51-ranked doubles team, and Quigley combined with Brad Cox make the No. 64 doubles team. Kentucky has an overall record of 20-7 and they are 5-3 in the SEC. Their last match was a loss to No. 3 Ohio State on Tuesday. Prior to that they took down No. 15 Florida and South Carolina.

"We have two rough road matches this week, and I know we will play well," said Cox.

On Sunday, the Razorbacks get on the road again and head to Tennessee to take on No. 33 Vanderbilt. The Commodores contain a ranked singles player in Ryan Lipman who is No. 27. Lipman paired with Adam Baker make up their No. 48-ranked doubles team. Vanderbilt is 11-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Last weekend they split with South Carolina and Florida. They were swept by Florida, 7-0, and defeated South Carolina in a 7-0 sweep. The Commodores’ match against the Hogs is set to begin at Noon on Sunday.
