FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team picked up seven wins in singles play Saturday at the Shocker Invitational hosted by Wichita State University. The Razorbacks also had three doubles victories during the day’s action.
Five Razorbacks improved to 2-0 on the young season, including No. 76 Blake Strode who defeated Illinois State’s Luka Marinkovic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The junior netter earned his second three-set win in as many days. Matt Hogan, Chris Nott, Tyler Tarnasky and Bradwin Williams were the other Arkansas players to win their second matches of the 2008 spring season.
Colin Mascall, Arkansas’ only senior, dropped the first set to Daniel Tobar but rebounded to take the match in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore Branden Joost, playing his first match of the spring, defeated Scott McCormick of Wichita State, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Strode and Mascall beat the No. 47 team of Luka Marinkovic and Daniel Tobar, 8-4. Chris Nott and Dmitry Lebedev defeated Nuno Jacinto and Xavier Riart-Ferrer, 8-3, and Matt Hogan and Bradwin Williams dropped an 8-4 decision to Michael Hobson and Oscar Beich.
Branden Joost teamed with Sergey Avdeyev of Oklahoma to beat McCormick and Rodrigo Briceno, 8-1.
The Shocker Invitational concludes Sunday as Arkansas will play Wichita State in doubles action. When the matches are complete, a singles and doubles champion will be named. Log on to www.hogwired.com for complete results.
