Hogs dominate doubles on day two in Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 24 University of Arkansas women’s tennis team had a much better day at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday, winning two of three doubles matches against players from No. 27 Washington.

Just one day removed from going winless in both singles and doubles on the first day of the invite, Arkansas came out firing at the top two doubles positions. In only their second match together, junior Claudine Paulson and sophomore Laurie Gingras defeated Samantha Smith and Andjela Nemcevic, 8-5, to notch their first victories of 2012.

The senior tandem of Stephanie Roy and Emily Carbone followed up with their own victory short after over Capucine Gregoire and Julija Lukac, 8-6, for their first win of the year as well. The Hogs almost got a clean doubles sweep on the day, but senior Kate Lukomskaya and freshman Catherine Parenteau fell 8-4 to Natali Coronel and Riko Shimizu. Nonetheless, the Razorbacks outperformed themselves from the first day and head coach Michael Hegarty likes what he saw from the team today.

“I’m pleased overall with our efforts today,” Hegarty said. “The doubles was obviously great quality from the whole squad and I felt our singles were a good step forward from yesterday.”

In those singles matches, the women faced a very tall task facing players from No. 10 Michigan. With the Wolverines bringing three ranked players at their top three positions, Arkansas got its best performance out of those positions from Lukomskaya at the third spot. Facing the 113th ranked Mimi Nguyen, Lukomskaya actually won the first set, 6-2. But Nguyen proved to be quite the opponent in the final two sets, winning 6-1, 6-3.

The Razorbacks got one more three set match in singles play on Sunday. Parenteau extended her match with Michelle Sulahian with a 6-4 second set win after dropping the first set, 6-2. A match that seemed like it was going to come down to the wire, Sulahian, unfortunately, dropped Parenteau in the final set, 6-2.

The Hogs will return to the courts for one more day of play in the Michigan Invite on Monday starting with singles against players from Washington at 9 a.m., followed by doubles against players from Georgia Tech approximately at noon.
