FAYETTEVILLE-The No. 42 Arkansas Razorback men’s tennis team fell short Friday to No. 13 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.The Rebels took doubles point and the match, 4-2.
“I have to give Ole Miss credit,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. “Ole Miss played great tennis.”
The Ole Miss Rebels jumped ahead early clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions.Arkansas’ lone win in doubles came from the newly found tandem of junior Matt Hogan and Nikolas Zogaj. The duo fought hard and defeated Adrian Forberg -Skongeng and Harry Fowler, 9-8(3).
Ole Miss’ momentum carried over into singles but players were forced off the courts due to rainstorms. Tennis action resumed and so did Ole Miss’ winning streak as they picked up wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, falling behind Dmitry Lebedev and Nikolas Zogaj. Marcel Thieman earned the Rebels victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matt Hogan on court 2.
“I am very proud of Chris Nott and Matt Walters coming through with the win,” Cox said. “They fought hard and were able to win in very difficult conditions.”
Highlight the match for the Hogs was sophomore Matt Walters with his second consecutive SEC win at the No. 6 position. Walters overpowered Harry Fowler in straight sets to win the match, 6-2, 6-1. At the top court, No. 57 Chris Nott dropped the first set to Tucker Vorster but fought back to even the score at a set apiece and eventually win the match, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(4).
“The doubles point really set the tone for the entire match.”Cox said. “We are going to regroup and get ready to play Mississippi State on the road on Sunday.”
Arkansas will continue conference play on Sunday as the Hogs will go head-to-head with Mississippi State at 10 a.m. in Starkville, Miss. Live stats for the match will be available for Sunday’s match atmstateathletics.com.
