Hogs finish Rice Invite with six more wins

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team got a huge boost from freshmen Jovan Parlic and Victor Hoang on Sunday at the Rice Invitational as both players scored wins in singles and tallied a doubles win together as well. The three wins were part of a six total win day for the Razorbacks as they concluded the three-day tournament with a 19-15 overall record in singles and doubles.

After a 3-1 day in doubles on Saturday, Arkansas was determined to go a perfect 4-0 on Sunday. Juniors Mike Ward and Gregoire Lehmann had the big doubles match of the day as they were in the finals of Flight A, facing Roger Anderson and Stefan Szacinski of LSU. Unfortunately, the Hog duo didn’t have their best match and were dropped 8-1.

The rest of the Hog doubles team were able to come out on the winning side of things as sophomore Manfred Jeske and senior Nikolas Zogaj earned an 8-3 win, their second of the year, and senior Matt Walters and junior Hall Fess scored a tough 9-8 win over Matt Zachary and James Turbervill of LSU. At one point in the match, the Razorbacks were down 6-3 and needed to break serve. Little by little Walters and Fess started making their comeback and eventually overtook the Tigers 8-5 in the tiebreaker.

Parlic and Hoang finished out the wins with an 8-6 victory of their own over Tulane’s Coby Kramer-Golinkoff and Takuma Ohashi. Over the last four fall tournaments, the Razorbacks have showed their strength in doubles racking up 18 wins in 25 total matches.

In singles, Arkansas got a quick straight set win from Zogaj in Flight A, but the story of the afternoon came from Parlic, who was taking on Anderson from LSU. Parlic had a tough first set that he eventually won 7-6, but came out in the second set on fire and finished the match off with a 6-0 second set win. Hoang followed suit with a straight set victory of his own, topping Rice’s Andy Wang, 7-5, 6-4.

The men’s tennis team will get the week off before they head to Norman, Okla. for the Oklahoma 1 plus 1. The tournament starts on Oct. 14 and runs through Oct. 16.
