ANNAPOLIS, Md. –Arkansas’ contingent got off to a solid start Friday and Saturday, winning four of six singles matches and three of four doubles’ contests in the first two days of action at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
The Hogs’ pair of newcomers from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry Lebedev and Dmitry Vlaskin, notched wins for the second consecutive day Saturday. Vlaskin defeated Maryland’s Scott Fink, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, while Lebedev was victorious over the Terrapins’ Daniel Kwon, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Each improve to 2-0 on the fall season. Fellow newcomer Jorge Villanueva fell to Maryland John O’Rourke, 6-4, 6-1.
Saturday’s doubles saw the Hogs’ duo of Villanueva and Vlaskin defeat Maryland’s Kwon and Boris and Boris Fetbroyt, 8-5. Lebedev paired up with Sergey Avdeyev of Oklahoma to beat O’Rourke and Aaron Carr, 9-7.
In Friday’s action, Lebedev and Dmitry posted victories in their collegiate debuts for the Hogs. Vlaskin knocked off Navy’s Adrian Lai, 6-1, 6-2, while Lebedev bested the Midshipmen’s Stanley Kahl, 6-1, 6-3. Villanueva dropped his Razorback debut to Navy’s Jason Hill, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, the Hogs’ pair of Villanueva and Vlaskin bettered Navy’s Kahl and Lai, 8-0. Lebedev teamed with Oklahoma’s Avdeyev, and the duo was defeated by Navy’s Hill and John Waters, 8-6.
Arkansas returns to the courts Sunday for the final day of the Navy Invitational. Play begins at 1 p.m. central.
