Hogs root their way into 3rd at Gridiron Classic

South Bend, Ind. The University of Arkansas men’s golf team wrapped up their third appearance of the fall season on Tuesday with a third place finish among the field of 15 teams with a 38-over 878(295-297-286). Tournament host, Notre Dame took the team win with a 30-over 870(290-288-292). Only four strokes separated Arkansas from Ohio Stat, who claimed second place.Notre Dame’s Josh Sandman was able to hold onto the top spot on the individual leader board in the final round to clinch the title with a 2-over 212(70-68-74). Arkansas’ own David Lingmerth managed a three-way tie for second place with Dan Charen of Ohio State and Kevin Hesbois of Lamar. Lingmerth carded a 4-over 214(73-70-71) at the par 70, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course bettering his previous year’s fifth place by a stroke.Also returning to the Gridiron Classic was sophomore Ethan Tracy who jumped 24 spots to end at a tie for 21st, after he shot one of the lower scores of the day, a 69, in the final round for an 11-over 221(77-75-69). Jamie Marshall, who captured his first collegiate win at the 2009 Wolverine, finished two strokes behind Tracy for a 13-over 223(73-75-75). Josh Eure and Ty Spinella also appeared for Arkansas shooting 16-over 226(74-77-75) and 17-over 227(75-81-71).The Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic marked the official breaking of the Hogs streak of second place finishes. Since March, the Razorbacks have finished in the No. 2 spot eight consecutive times, including the SEC, NCAA Regional, and the NCAA Championships. The Razorbacks will next be seen in action at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. Oct. 12-13.
