Hogs take 2nd in the Border Olympics

LAREDO, TX-The 2009 Border Olympics ended on Saturday with Baylor University taking the title with a 877(297-282-298) for the 54-hole, two day event. Trailing by just seven strokes was last year’s tournament champion the No. 21 ranked University of Arkansas men’s golf team with 884(295-292-297). Arkansas began the day behind Baylor and University of Louisville, in third place.“Some of the results of working hard on our short game were seen here at this tournament. All in all, it was a good week for us, and the guys feel pretty positive right now,” Arkansas head coach Brad McMakin said of the team’s performance.Two strokes behind Arkansas was Coach McMakin and Andrew Landry’s former team, Lamar University who went 886(294-299-293). Following by another two strokes was the University of Texas-Arlington with 888(286-302-300). Vanderbilt, who won last weeks Seminole Intercollegiate fell into a tie for 10th place after a third round of 309, adding to day one’s 297 and 297 to produce a 902 finish. Tournament host, University of Houston ended with a 936(309-309-318) in 15th place.On the individual leaderboard, UTA’s Bobby Massa took first place with a 5-under score of 211(6-73-72). Texas State University’s Jeff Gerlich came in at No. 2 with a 1-under 215(72-72-71). In third place was Arkansas freshman Ethan Tracy who shot an even par 216(70-72-74).“Ethan Tracy has been stepping up and becoming a great addition. Jason Cuthbertson played well for us, as well as Jamie Marshall,” McMakin said.Senior Andrew Landry 222(73-72-77) tied for the No. 15 spot along with teammate Jamie Marshall 222(75-73-74). Jason Cuthbertson tied for No. 33 with a 9-over 225(77-76-72). David Lingmerth tied from 47th with a 229(77-75-77).“We caught them on the front nine holes, but had some trouble with the back nine. It has been tough going out there with Landry and Lingmerth not having the good rounds we are accustomed to, but we are gaining some confidence in the team as a whole,” McMakin said. “In the post season, I think that will prove to be particularly beneficial to both Landry and Lingmerth.”The Razorbacks will next see tournament play at the Texas Invitational March 28-29.“We have Texas to contend with in the next tournament, which will be a good test for us. With two big weeks to prepare, we hope to work on the getting our entire game on again,” McMakin added.
