FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team (4-9, 0-4 SEC) came away with a win today against the Shockers of Wichita State, 5-2.
“The guys gave a great effort today,” said head coach Robert Cox. “I was really proud of them.”
The No. 65-ranked Hogs started out strong as they took the first two matches in doubles at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Matt Hogan paired with Hall Fess in his first appearance of dual competition to defeat Adrian Chermaci and Valentin Mihai, 8-5. Seniors Gregoire Lehmann and Chris Nott then clinched the doubles point for the Hogs with an 8-5 win over Vlad Marinescu and Guillermo Nicol. Wichita State finished up doubles play with a win. David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira defeated Nikolas Zogaj and Mike Ward 8-7 (9-7).
In singles competition, the Razorbacks won at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions and then clinched the match at No. 2. Both Chris Nott and Matt Hogan were victorious in two setters. Wichita State’s Valentin Mihai put the Shockers on the board with a win over Matt Walters, 6-2, 6-2. Matt Hogan clinched the match at the No. 2 position with a win over Pereira, 6-2, 6-3. Guillermo Nicol picked up another win for the Shockers over Gregoire Lehmann. Mike Ward closed out play with another win for the Hogs over Juan Estenssoro 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
“The guys had some really great matches, said Cox. “Now we have to get ready for Saturday.”
