IRVING – The Arkansas Razorbacks continued preparations for the 66th SBC Cotton Bowl Classic with a two-hour, full-pads practice at Texas Stadium Friday.
Arkansas worked on all phases of the game and at the conclusion of practice, head coach Houston Nutt announced that sophomore Brandon Holmes will start at tailback, with sophomore Cedric Cobbs and junior Fred Talley as the primary back-ups.
“Brandon Holmes will start at tailback,” Nutt said. “Cedric practiced just a little bit today, not much. I still think there is plenty of time for him to get ready. He won’t start the game but he should play.”
Holmes, who has been sidelined following a disciplinary suspension in mid-October, received the starting nod after Nutt held meetings with the coaching staff and players.
“After looking at everything and talking to the seniors and to the team, we felt like he has had enough punishment and we are going to go forward,” Nutt added.
Holmes played in seven games this season and started against Georgia and Weber State. The Atlanta, Ga., native rushed for 165 yards on 49 carries and scored three touchdowns.
The Razorbacks (7-4, 4-4 SEC) are making their fourth consecutive bowl appearance for the fourth time in school history. Nutt is only the third coach to lead the Hogs to a bowl game in his first four seasons, joining Ken Hatfield and Lou Holtz.
Arkansas and Oklahoma (10-2, 6-2 Big 12) are meeting for the 15th time, with the Sooners holding a 9-4-1 advantage in the series.
Kickoff for the 66th SBC Cotton Bowl Classic is set for 10:10 am CST. Arkansas will be the home team and occupy the west sideline.
