Honors Awarded at Track Banquet

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Honors were awarded Thursday night as the Arkansas track and field team held their annual banquet at the Clarion Inn in Fayetteville, Ark. Sophomore Alistair Cragg was named the team captain and the most outstanding runner. Cragg captured the 5,000-meter title at the NCAA Indoor Championships and last weekend he anchored the two winning relay teams at the Penn Relays. Cragg also recently set a new UA school record in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Junior Daniel Lincoln was given the Scholar-Athlete Award. Lincoln has maintained a 3.93 grade point average in the honors biochemistry program and has the nation’s fastest time in the steeplechase this year. He was an All-American in cross country and during the indoor season he finished eighth in the 3,000 meters and fourth in the 5,000 meters.
Freshmen Jason Sandfort and Said Ahmed shared the freshman runner of the year honor. At the Penn Relays Sandfort became the first freshman from Arkansas to win the 10,000-meter run. During the NCAA Indoor Championships he finished fifth in the 5,000 meters and was an All-American in cross country. Ahmed finished third in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Freshman Jonathan Reeves was named outstanding freshman field events athlete. Reeves was a high school All-American and finished third in the shot put at the SEC Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Westley Alkin was named the most improved runner after his performances during the cross country season, the 5,000 meters at the SEC Indoors and the 10,000 meters during the outdoor season.
Sophomore Maurice Robinson was named the team’s most outstanding field events athlete. Robinson finished fifth in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships and earned All-American honors.
Two seniors were also recognized: Rogers, Ark., native Andrew Beasley and Pine Bluff, Ark., native Sam Glover. Beasley helped lead the Hogs to a second-place finish in the 4×800-meter relay at the Penn Relays and Glover was a two-time All-American in the 400-meter hurdles.
