Hudson Completes Day 1 Of All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Arkansas senior co-captain Shannon Hudson kicked off play for the Razorbacks at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Saturday at Pepperdine University.

Hudson closed out the day with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over UTEP’s Vivienne Kulicke in pre-qualifying draw singles consolation play, despite a first-round setback earlier in the day.

“It was great to finish the day on a high note,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “Shannon played her best tennis at the end of the day, which is always important.”

In her first-round contest, Hudson was edged out by Duke’s Meible Chi  7-6 (4)-6-1.

Saturday’s competition marked Hudson’s first action of the fall.

For the 31st consecutive year, the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, is serving as host for both the qualifying and main draw matches. Pre-qualifying matches are being held at Pepperdine University. Qualifying matches will begin Tuesday and main draw contests get underway Thursday. The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Oct. 9.

The Razorbacks return to action Tuesday as 2015 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team selection Ana Oparenovic is set to compete in the qualifying singles draw. Match time and opponent are to be determined. Hudson and Oparenovic will also team up in the qualifying doubles draw. The tandem is ranked 49th nationally.
