ATHENS, Ga. — Arkansas senior co-captain Shannon Hudson cruised to a straight-set win against Caroline Doyle of 18-time national champion and 2017 runner up Stanford in the opening round of the NCAA singles championship Wednesday night.

No. 45-ranked Hudson blew past No. 38-ranked Doyle 6-3, 6-1 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus in a match that featured each program’s No. 1 singles player.

“What a fabulous performance from Shannon,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “It was definitely her best match of the season. To perform like that against one of the best players in the tournament speaks volumes of how Shannon is playing right now.”

After Hudson won the first set 6-3, Doyle took a 1-0 lead in the second set, but Hudson was never threatened as she went on to win the next six games to capture the set and the match.

It was Hudson’s 17th overall singles win this season, including her sixth against a nationally ranked opponent.

The Razorbacks also checked in at No. 19 in the final national team rankings, released Wednesday. It’s the program’s highest final team ranking since 2009.
