Hudson’s NCAA Singles Quest Halted

ATHENS, Ga. – Arkansas senior co-captain and No. 45-ranked Shannon Hudson fell in a 6-4, 7-6 (1) decision to No. 15-ranked Sydney Campbell of No. 4-ranked Vanderbilt in the second round of the NCAA singles championship Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.

“Today was a high quality match from both players,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “It was great to see Shannon play some of her best tennis here at the national championship both days.”

Hudson was coming off a 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 38-ranked Caroline Doyle of 18-time national champion and 2017 runner up Stanford in the opening round.

A second-team All-SEC selection, Hudson helped the Razorbacks finish the 2017 team season with an 18-10 (7-6 SEC) record and earn a No. 19 national ranking.

The two-time SEC Player of the Week turned in 17 overall singles victories this season, including 11 at the No. 1 spot and six against nationally ranked opponents. She delivered five match-clinching victories, with three coming in SEC play. She also posted 15 overall doubles wins, including 13 this spring, nine at the top spot and two against ranked competition.

Hudson and freshman Giula Pairone, ranked No. 40 nationally in doubles, will take on No. 13-ranked Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA doubles championship at a time to be announced.
