FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team finished off a successful weekend of dual-event competition on Sunday, as Sarah McLean and Yang Pang scored impressive victories at the Little Rock Classic, while Shannon Hudson claimed a flight championship at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational.
In just her first weekend of collegiate tennis competition, Hudson finished off her run in the Julie Shiflit flight of the William & Mary Tribe Invitational with a victory in the singles title match over USC’s Brigit Folland, 6-3, 6-4.
Also competing in Williamsburg, Va., McLean battled impressively and went the distance to record an upset over No. 66 Sarah Pham of Utah in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
"The third day of a strong individual tournament is both a physical and mental challenge," head coachMichael Hegarty said. "It was very encouraging to see both Sarah and Shannon have their best day of competition at the toughest moment."
More than just posting impressive wins over quality opponents, Hegarty was pleased with the display of endurance from Hudson and McLean, who played through a number of lengthy matches.
"Shannon turned around today from a three hour, 40 minute marathon yesterday as fresh as a daisy to win her title," Hegarty said. "Sarah went three and a half hours toe-to-toe with Pham, who will be one of the best players in the PAC-12 Conference this year. What a fantastic effort and quality performance for her."
Holding her own for the Razorbacks in Little Rock, Ark., was Pang, as the Razorback fended off No. 47 Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma in singles play, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. It was the second of two impressive wins on the weekend for the sophomore ranked No. 43 herself, after the Nanjing, China, native also recorded a victory over the ITA’s sixth-ranked freshman/newcomer, Despoina Vogasari of Houston, on Friday.
Pang joined with teammate Brittany Huxley to earn a win in doubles play as well, as the Razorback pair defeated Whitney Wofford and Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma, 8-4. Flavia Araujo and Kimberley – Ann Surin also teamed up against Houston’s Celia Fraser and Elena Kordolaimi, winning 8-5.
Araujo and Huxley also competed in singles play at the Little Rock Classic, with Araujo dropping her contest to Houston’s Maria Cardenas, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1, and Huxley falling to Marja Milutinovic of Ole Miss, 6-3, 6-3.
