Jacobus Picks Up SEC Recognition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Arkansas men’s track and field junior decathlete Derek Jacobus has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Field Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday afternoon.

Jacobus shares the honor with South Carolina’s Josh Awotunde who currently sits at the top of the NCAA leader board in the shot put.

A national qualifier in the decathlon last year, Jacobus snagged a new PR in the 10-competition event at the Arkansas Spring Invitational on Saturday, achieving a mark of 7,437 points. His SOLID performance crushed his former personal best by 81 points.

Jacobus posted top-three finishes in four out of the five events on day one and followed it up with solid efforts on day two. He finished as the top collegiate entry in the event and in second place overall.

A 2015 transfer from Northern Iowa, Jacobus currently leads the SEC and the NCAA by over 350 points and is the sixth best combined events performer in Arkansas history.
