FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas All-American Oskar Johansson has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region VI Player of the Year.
The senior from Malmoe, Sweden, has been the top-ranked player in the nation most of the season and is currently ranked No. 4. Johansson, who is 28-9 with titles in the National Clay Court Championships and the River Oaks Intercollegiate, leads No. 26 Arkansas into the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against No. 34 North Carolina in Dallas.
The Razorbacks have advanced to the NCAA Tournament five of the last eight years.
Regardless of what happens in the NCAA Tournament team competition, Johansson has already qualified for the NCAA individual tournament, which begins May 23 in Athens, Ga.
Johansson has also teamed with senior Henrik Tofft to go 9-4 and earn a berth in the NCAA doubles event beginning May 24.
In other ITA Region VI awards, Texas A&M’s Tim Cass was named Coach of the Year, Rice’s Shaheen Ladhani the Assistant Coach of the Year, Rice’s Richard Baker the Rookie of the Year, Texas’ Jean Simon the Player to Watch, Baylor’s Mark Williams received the Arthur Ash and Rafeal Osuna awards, and Southern Methodist’s Genius Chidzikwe won the Van Nostrom Award.
