FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Following is a brief transcript of a press conference held today by Arkansas head track and field coach John McDonnell to preview the 2002 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The 2002 SEC meet will be held on Feb. 22-24 at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
(On UA chances of winning the SEC championship)
“This is the first year and I’m always playing it down, but this is one year I’m not playing tricks. We’re really underdogs. The top four teams in the country are in our conference. LSU has more depth than Tennessee, but Tennessee has a lot of great athletes up front they’re more of a national type team.
“We’re young and I think we have a pretty good chance. But we don’t know if they’ll show up or not, there’s more pressure on them. We’ve got tradition on our side. The guys from last year have settled them down a bit. It will be a tough battle.”
(On what UA needs to do to win)
“Our distance runners will have to carry the load and our field events, which is very unusual for us, are definitely down. But we have two guys that if they make up their minds to triple jump and long jump, they’ll jump far and that’s what we need.
“It’s gonna be a dog fight, but that’s what it’s all about. We want to win this championship. We lost it last year, first outdoor championship ever we lost and our guys didn’t like it too much. We have a chance to get this championship back, but it won’t take guys out there limping and gimping or looking for a place to hide. We need every guy to stand up and be counted and that’s where we’ve been good in the past, but last year we didn’t do that. I don’t think this team is going to look for a place to hide.”
