BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Freshman Joe Johnson scored 30 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Arkansas to an 83-73 win over Mississippi State at Bud Walton Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson became the first Razorback freshman to score 30 points in a game since Scotty Thurman pulled the trick in 1992 against Missouri. The Razorbacks (11-7, 3-2 SEC) also got 15 points from senior Chris Walker.
Mississippi State (11-7, 2-3 SEC) was led by Tang Hamilton who also scored 15 points.
“Today we swarmed on defense and looked like the teams we have had here that were very good,” Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson said. “Joe had a great game and he will continue to get better as we get him in shape. I thought Gomez had the best game of his season.”
Mississippi State held a two-point halftime lead, but the Razorbacks outscored the visitor’s 48-36 in the second half to take the win.
The Hogs return to the court on Wednesday night when they travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take on the LSU Tigers.
