Josephat Boit Named SEC Athlete of the Week
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After claiming first place at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo., over the weekend junior transfer Josephat Boit earned Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week honors for his performance. The 8K meet was the first of his Razorback career since he joined the Hogs from Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan.
“It was his first time to put on an Arkansas jersey and it’s nice that he was named athlete of the week in the SEC,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “I think this is just the beginning for Josephat. He’s a great athlete and he’s going to do very well if he stays healthy.”
Boit captured top honors with a time of 23:54.82 and helped lead Arkansas to a team victory with 20 points. The Eldoret, Kenya native finished ahead of 240 competitors from 22 other schools and dominated the race as he crossed the line 20 seconds before the second-place finisher. His performance also helped propel nine other UA runners to finish in the top 20.
Boit is the second Razorback to garner the league honor since the 2004 campaign started. Junior Luis Bordes was given the award after he finished first at the season-opening Arkansas Invitational on Sept. 3. The Razorbacks will enjoy this week off as they prepare for the 8K Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 2, in Stillwater, Okla. The 10K Chile Pepper Invitational will follow in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 16.
