FAYETTEVILLE — With a win Wednesday night at the U-20 Pan American Cup, University of Arkansas volleyball redshirt freshman Ana Sofia Jusino has helped Puerto Rico qualify for the 2013 FIVB Junior World Championships. Jusino and Puerto Rico swept host Cuba to earn its way into the summer event which will take place June 21-30 in the Czech Republic.
In addition to qualifying for the Junior World Championships, Puerto Rico’s win secured the team’s first-place standing in pool play at the Pan American Cup which is being held in Havana, Cuba. Jusino was the team’s second-leading scorer with nine points behind six kills and three blocks.
Puerto Rico finished play in Group B with a 3-0 record with wins over Chile, Costa Rica and Cuba. In the team’s first match, Jusino had seven total points to help Puerto Rico rally from a two-set deficit and come away with a five-set victory over Chile. Including Wednesday’s match against Cuba, Puerto Rico won its next two matches in straight sets. Jusino had six kills in Tuesday’s win over Costa Rica.
Quarterfinal action at the 2013 U-20 Pan American Cup begins Thursday with Puerto Rico taking on Peru. After a day of semifinal and consolation play, the finals of the event will be held Saturday.
