Kentucky Wins Slugfest, 11-8; Earns Split of D

LEXINGTON, Ky. – John Shelby hit three home runs and drove in five runs to help Kentucky knock off the Arkansas 11-8 Saturday afternoon and split a double header in front of 249 fans at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Shelby went 4-for-4 with 13 total bases and a career-high five RBI. The Razorbacks’ pitching staff gave up four home runs, equaling a season high set by LSU on April 22.
Arkansas now sits at 33-12 overall and 9-11 in SEC play. The win was the Wildcats fourth in league action this season (4-15) with a 22-20 overall record. Arkansas won the first game of the double header 8-5 as Nick Schmidt pitched six strong innings.
“We did a great job battling back,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “We were down 8-1 three innings into the game and battled back. We were one big hit away from winning that game. We just didn’t do the little things.”
The Razorbacks, once down by seven runs at 8-1 through three innings, scored four times in the top of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Blake Parker, Brock Bond and Craig Gentry and a wild pitch by UK starter Aaron Tennyson.
Arkansas got within one run in the fifth inning on Chris Hollensworth’s second home run of the game. The three-run shot trimmed the UK lead to 8-7 and marked Hollensworth’s first multiple home run game of the season.
Craig Snipp (3-3) earned the win out of the bullpen with two innings of relief. He allowed two runs on two hits. Jesse Baber picked up his fourth save of the season by pitching the final three innings.
Kentucky opened up a 4-0 first-inning lead with a two-RBI double off the bat of Shaun Lehmann and a two-run home run off the bat of John Shelby. It was Shelby’s eight-home run of the season.
Hollensworth answered for the Razorbacks in the top of the second inning with his second home run, a solo shot to dead-center field. Hollensworth finished the day 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
It didn’t take the Wildcats long to get that run back as nine-hole hitter Ryan Wilkes crushed his first career home run over the scoreboard in right field. JB Schmidt followed with a single deep in the hole at shortstop that ended UA starter Daryl Maday’s afternoon. Maday gave up six runs – all earned – on six hits while facing 10 hitters in one-plus inning. The loss was his first of the season and career.
Devin Collis came on and allowed a singled that scored the Cats sixth run. He pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs – all earned – on four hits, while walking one and striking out one.
Shelby hit his second home run of the day in the third inning, a two-run shot to left field that gave UK an 8-1 lead in the third inning.
Shelby hit his third home run in the seventh inning and Kevin Caldwell added a RBI double to extended the lead to 11-7.
The Razorbacks placed one run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bond.
The two teams play the rubber game of series at 12:05 p.m. on Sunday at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Arkansas then returns home to face fifth-ranked Florida on May 6-8 at Baum Stadium.
