Lady'Back golf travels to OU this weekend

FAYETTEVILLE — The 24th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team returns to action this weekend traveling to Norman, Okla., for the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic Sunday and Monday. "This is a great wrap up to the regular season," said Arkansas assistant coach Shauna Estes. "It’s also good preparation for the upcoming SEC Championship. We’re still trying to sew up that fifth spot before postseason begins." Arkansas heads to the 18-team tournament paced by junior all-American Stacy Lewis. Lewis is the reigning Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week after a tie for fifth place in the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Lewis leads Arkansas in stroke average and ranks among the SEC leaders again this week. "Stacy Lewis continues to put Arkansas golf on the map," said Estes. "She’s a great ambassador for our program and our university. We are all very proud to have her on the team." The Lady’Backs also send sophomore Lucy Nunn, freshmen Alex Schulte and Kristin Ingram and junior Ashley Medders into action this weekend. Junior Whitney Sylvan will compete as an individual as well. Nunn, like Lewis, has improved her overall numbers since this time last year while Schulte is still recovering from a sprained wrist. The Lady Razorbacks play the par 72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course for the third time in program history. Arkansas also played at this event in 2001 and 2002. Arkansas faces another large field with 18 teams teeing it up. The Lady Razorbacks, however, are the statistically the highest ranked team regardless of poll in the field. The Lady’Backs are ranked 24th in both the Golfweek and Golstat polls. Arkansas is 23rd in the Golf World poll. Baylor comes in ranked 40th in Golfweek and 38th in Golfstat, followed by New Mexico State (58/51) and host Oklahoma (60/61). This event is the final tune-up as the Lady Razorbacks prepare for the Southeastern Conference Championship April 20-22, at Old Waverly in West Point, Miss.
