FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team began their first week of practice for the 2008 season on Monday, Jan. 14 at Lady’Back Yard.
The Lady Razorbacks worked mainly on defensive skills outside while the weather cooperated. If needed, the Lady’Backs will practice indoors at the Willard and Pat Walker Pavilion.
“We had a very high intensity, high-spirited workout yesterday,” said head coach Jamie Pinkerton. “The work ethic at practice was focused and ready to go and the ladies reported back in good team fitness. We’ll spend a lot of time focusing on fundamentals this week and if the weather cooperates we’ll be able to have live hitting and start working on situational softball next week.”
Defensive fundamentals were the focus of yesterday’s practice, while today the Lady’Backs work on more in-depth defensive strategies.
“With the upcoming weather, we’ll most likely be indoors later in the week and focus on the offensive side of the game,” said Pinkerton.
Saturday, the Lady’Backs take a break from practice for their winter clinics in hitting and pitching and catching. Hitting sessions run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and pitching and catching sessions begin at 5:30 p.m.
Arkansas’s first regular season game is slated for Feb. 8-10, when the Lady’Backs travel to Texarkana, Ark., for the Century Bank Classic. Arkansas faces Alabama-Birmingham, Centenary and Oklahoma State in the three day event.
The Lady’Backs host their home opener Feb. 21 against Northern Colorado before welcoming the Bears, Alcorn State, Creighton and St. Louis to the Clarion Inn-Lady’Back Invitational Feb. 22-24.
Arkansas opens Southeastern Conference play March 8-9 at South Carolina.
The 2008 squad is led by seniors Samantha Buckner, Katy Henry and Dayna Huckabee. Arkansas returns 15 players and welcomes nine newcomers.
