Lady'Back volleyball garners national recognition

Jump toCSTV/AVCApoll|| Jump to RichKern.com poll || Jump toRichKern.com RKPI FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas volleyball team is out to a 7-1 start this year and the program is getting some national recognition for their efforts. Arkansas received eight votes in this week’s CSTV/AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and are among the "others receiving votes" in the national poll. The Lady’Backs fared even better in the RichKern.com poll this week garnering 15 points and would be ranked 33rd in the on-line poll. In addition, Arkansas’ tough schedule is being recognized by RichKern.com as the 13th-best in the country at this point in the season. "Our pre-conference schedule has given us the chance to play teams in other conference and test ourselves against several really good programs," said Arkansas head coach Chris Poole. "I probably pay more attention to the power rankings than any other because it mirrors what the NCAA uses for postseason selection. We’re right where I want to be for this time of year and the poll recognition is great for the current team and for the program as a whole." The CSTV/AVCA coaches poll is the most widely used volleyball poll and the Lady’Backs are named among the nation’s best teams this year. In fact, several of Arkansas’ 2006 opponents are also in the rankings. Southeastern Conference rival Florida is ranked sixth this week while Tennessee is 13 and LSU is 18th. BYU, a team the Lady’Backs faced last week in Kansas, checks in at No. 19 while Kansas is also getting votes. The RichKern.com poll also has Florida at No. 6 followed by No. 12 Tennessee, No. 17 BYU and No. 18 LSU. Kansas and Kentucky are also getting votes in that poll. The RKPI, a simulation of the NCAA RPI ranking system, lists LSU at No. 8, followed by No. 10 Florida, No. 12 BYU and No. 26 Tennessee. The Lady Razorbacks open SEC play this weekend with a pair of road matches at Kentucky on Friday and at No. 13 Tennessee Sunday. Both matches will air live in the Northwest Arkansas area on KXUA, 88.3 FM and on LADYBACKS.COM.
