Atlanta, Ga.The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team began their run in the SEC Coaches Classic a day early with six singles matches at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga., Thursday.
The Lady Razorbacks finished all square in the first day of competition, going 3-3 against five different Southeastern Conference teams. With the Thursday victories, the Lady’Backs captured their 84th victory in 141 attempts, and are 64-46 in singlesaffairs.
Junior transfer Karina Ledaja won her 10th match as a Lady’Back over LSU’s Camila Caliari. The Latvian native lost the first set, 6-4, but fought back to win easily in the next two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Melissa Cornett won over Ole Miss’s Carlin Cochran in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The win marks Cornett’s first singles win against the Rebels.
Audrey Bordeleau won her first match in the competitive D flight. The freshman defeated Vanderbilt’s Julie Martin 7-6, 7-5 to capture her eighth singles victory at Arkansas.
In flight B action, Yawna Allen was edged by Auburn’s Ashley Cowart in three sets. Allen blanked her Auburn foe in the first set, 6-0, but Cowart fought back to take the second and third sets 6-4, 6-3, respectively. Senior Whitney Morton fell to Ole Miss’s Sarah Sabin, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Allie Linden was defeated by Georgia’s Anastasiya Shevchenko, 7-6, 6-3.
“The SEC is a tremendous league and every match is extremely competitive,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “I was extremely encouraged by yesterday’s results and we are looking forward to the weekend.”
