FAYETTEVILLE – With the help of a successful fall campaign, the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team was voted to finish second in the Southeastern Conference Western Division in the 2006 preseason coaches’ poll.
The poll used a 6-5-4-3-2-1 ranking format, with the Lady Razorbacks just five points behind the division-leading Ole Miss (53). The Lady’Backs take the court against the Lady Rebels on April 2 in Oxford, Miss. midway through the conference schedule.
The reigning SEC champion Florida Gators reeled in the most points of any team with 59.
Arkansas begins the conference schedule on March 3 at Georgia and heads to the 2006 SEC Tournament on April 20 in Gainesville, Fla.
"It’s obviously going to be another banner year for SEC tennis," said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. "The conference goes from strength to strength and there seems to be even more parody than ever this year."
Last season, the Lady’Backs finished the year 11-11 while tallying their first conference win in three years over Auburn. Fickle weather at the SEC Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala. didn’t help matters as the Lady’Backswere ousted in the first round by South Carolina.
The Lady’Backs begin the spring season Jan. 27 against Oral Roberts and Missouri State at noon and 5:00 p.m., respectively. For more information on Arkansas tennis or any other Lady Razorback sport, please visit LADYBACKS.com.
