Lady’Backs play best tennis this fall on Day Two of Collegiate Classic

Flushing, N.Y.—The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team played their best tennis of the fall on Sunday afternoon at the second day of the USTA Collegiate Classic in Flushing N.Y. The Lady Razorbacks went 6-2 in singles and 2-2 in doubles on Sunday, sending the Lady’Back fall win column over the 75-win mark. Maryori Franco set the tone for Arkansas on Sunday with a quarterfinal victory over Flight A’s top seed, North Carolina’s Aneala Mojvis. Franco made the match against the tough Tar Heel look easy, defeating Mojvis in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Franco was scheduled to play in semifinal action later that afternoon, but was pulled from the court for precautionary reasons. The quarterfinal win gives Franco her ninth singles win this fall. Also in Flight A action, Vlatka Jovanovic captured her ninth victory of the 2004 fall season. The Arkansas junior won in 6-2, 6-2 against Penn’s Julia Aoulbitskaya. “All things considered it was our best day of the fall,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “It was exciting to see Maryori defeat North Carolina’s top player easily and Vlatka had a quality win. In each division we had a good day.” In Flight B, Yawna Allen notched her first victory at the Classic in a three-set bout that was sent to a super tiebreaker against Penn State’s Sarah Spence, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7. The victory gives the Arkansas freshman her seventh fall victory. Also in flight B, Iliana Pacheco was defeated by Southeastern Conference foe Bryce Marable of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-0 In Flight C, Melissa Cornett was victorious in straight sets against Army’s Christine Bicksler, 6-1, 6-0. The win gives Cornett her fifth singles victory of the fall. Karina Ledaja cruised to victory over Texas A&M’s Seva Iwinski. The 6-1, 6-1 win is Ledaja’s eighth singles win as a Lady’Back. Flight D action saw freshman Audrey Bordeleau gather her second singles victory of the tournament and seventh win of the fall with a 6-4, 6-1 dismissal of Georgetown’s Stephanie Cohen. Whitney Morton suffered her first singles loss at the Classic at the hands of South Carolina’s Megan McGavock. McGavock beat the Arkansas senior in a super tiebreaker to win the match 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. In doubles, Cornett and Jovanovic fell to the skilled Flight A opposition. The Lady’Back duo was defeated by Tennessee’s Marable and Schaub, 8-4. In Flight B, Ledaja and Bordeleau combined for a win over Yale’s Starr and Vartikar. The 8-4 win also gives Ledaja and Bordeleau their sixth win of the fall season. Pacheco and Morton gave Arkansas their second doubles victory of the day. The senior team beat Boston’s Charest and Spiekema, 8-3. The Lady’Back team fell later that afternoon to Kentucky’s Simpson and Winebrenner, 8-5. “Tomorrow is another day where we will see seven more competitive singles matches against quality opposition,” said Hegarty.
