Lady'Backs take break from SEC play in Lone Star state

The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team is taking a break from Southeastern Conference play this weekend as they travel to the Lone Star State to face two old Southwest Conference rivals.

The Lady Razorbacks (4-5, 0-4) are scheduled to face the Baylor Bears (11-2, 4-0) on Mar. 18 at 1:00 p.m. in Waco, Tex., followed on the next day with a match in Dallas, Tex. against the Southern Methodist Mustangs (8-5, 1-0) at noon.

“These non-conference matches are going to really help us down the stretch in SEC play,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “We are excited at the opportunity.”

The Lady’Backs are in for a true test against the Baylor Bears. Arkansas has not faced the Waco Bears since the 2001-02 season. Although their all-time record against Baylor is 14-4, the Lady’Backs have not won since the 1998-99 season in a 6-3 posting in Waco.

The reining Big 12 champions also bring ITA Individual singles champion Zusana Zemenova as their top player to equalize Arkansas ace freshman Aurelija Miseviciute. Miseviciute won her 20th career match against Kentucky’s Kim Coventry, 6-0, 6-1, on March 12 in Fayetteville.

After the matches against Baylor and SMU, the Lady’Backs travel to Gainesville, Fla. for a Friday match against the SEC-leading Gators on Mar. 24.
