Lady'Backs win ITA Central Region Playoff

FAYETTEVILLE –University of Arkansas freshman Delia Demaschin claimed the first singles win sparking a 4-0 Lady Razorback victory over Oklahoma at the ITA Central Region playoff on Saturday.

“Oklahoma is a very strong team, and I am very proud our team was able to get a quality win,” said Lady’Back head tennis coach Michael Hegarty. “The score did not illustrate the closeness and intensity of this match.”

In doubles, the No. 25 ranked duo senior Maryori Franco and junior Nanar Airapetian made easy work of Oklahoma’s Maria Kalashnikova and Rachel Cox, 8-2. Fellow Lady’Backs Audrey Bordeleau and Demaschin followed the lead and defeated Christi Baxley and Elena Antakova, 8-3, sealing the first point of the afternoon for Arkansas.

The sweep of doubles gained inspiring recognition from Hegarty.

“The level of energy in doubles was probably the best I have ever seen at Arkansas, it’s great getting an opportunity to play team-type tennis in the fall.”

In singles action, Demaschin enjoyed a, 6-1, 6-0, victory over Cox giving the Lady’Backs a two point cushion. Then, No. 119 ranked junior Aurelija Miseviciute continued her fall dominance against Ana-Maria Constantinescu, 6-3, 6-2. Bordeleau, the senior from Quebec, clinched the playoff win by easing past Antakova, 6-2, 6-2.

Due to Arkansas clinching the first four points, action in the final three matches was halted.

The Lady’Backs will be back in action this week at the SEC Fall Coaches’ Championships on October 17-21, in Auburn, Ala.
