FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas softball coach Mike Larabee and the Razorbacks wrapped up the fall schedule on campus last week but the coach won’t hang up his whistle and wait for the spring just yet. Larabee joins several colleagues as members of the coaching staff for the USA softball delegation for the XVI Pan American Games. The multi-sport event takes place Oct. 14-30, in Guadalajara, Mexico, with the softball competition slated for Oct. 17-23. “This is a great opportunity to continue to learn and grow as a coach,” Larabee said. “I’m excited and honored to represent my country and I can’t imagine anything as exciting as winning a gold medal and hearing our national anthem played.” The USA softball team played to a gold medal finish at the World Cup of Softball VI in Oklahoma City, Okla., this summer, marking the fifth consecutive World Cup title for the Americans. Team USA has won seven Pan American Championships, most recently in 2007 and has won the last six in a row. Larabee and the team begin training this weekend in Texas and played a pair of exhibition contests before traveling to Mexico. While in Mexico the schedule includes Venezuela (Oct. 17), the Dominican Republic and Mexico (Oct. 18), Cuba and Puerto Rico (Oct. 19) and Canada and Argentina (Oct. 21). Playoffs begin Oct. 22 with the medal round scheduled for Oct. 23.
