PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – University of Arkansas sophomore-to-be Emma Lavy shot 145 and tied for ninth after two rounds of qualifying at the 111th Women’s Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., this week.

Lavy opened with a first round 74 (39-35) and was tied for 20th overall, eight strokes behind the leader. She improved with a one-under 71 in the second round moving up after Tuesday’s play.

The official press release for the event noted that conditions were tough due in part to the fires in Northern Florida and Southeastern Georgia and high winds. The smoke dissipated as the second round wrapped up.

The event is one of the oldest, most consecutively played women’s tournaments in the country and has been played at several courses around the United States.

Lavy took part in a 36-hole stroke play qualifier. The low 64 qualify for flights with 16 players. The first round of match play begins Wednesday and continues with a final two matches on Saturday.

Lavy faces Sarah Ababa of Davao City, Philippines, today at 1:15 p.m. central.
