FAYETTEVILLE – Kevin Lazas, a member of the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team, is in first place after day one of the decathlon at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships in Miramar, Fla. Through five events, Lazas paces the field with 4,066 points, just 16 points ahead of future Razorback teammate Gunnar Nixon, who is in second with 4,050 points.
After two events in second place, Lazas moved into the lead with a victory in the shot put competition. Using the junior implements, the Brentwood, Tenn., native unleashed a throw of 50-6.25 (15.40m), good for 814 points toward his total. Lazas maintained the lead through the final two events of the day. In the first event of the day, he posted a personal-best time of 10.92 in the 100 meters.
Lazas qualified for the Pan Am event with his victory in the decathlon at the USA Junior Championships back in June. During the meet, he set the American junior record with his finishing total of 8,016 points.
Nixon, the soon-to-be Razorback freshman, made a late push to cut into Lazas’ lead. He began the day in fifth place after the 100 meters but settled into second after the shot put. Nixon went on to win the high jump and closed the day with a third-place result in the 400 meters. The Edmond, Okla., native finished second at the USA Junior Championships with 7,748 points.
Lazas and Nixon close out competition in the decathlon Saturday with the final five events-110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters. The duo will be looking to repeat their 1-2 finish from the 2011 USA Junior Championships back in June. Log on to ArkansasRazorbacks.com for continued coverage and more information.
