Lazas wins USA Junior title, sets record

FAYETTEVILLE – Kevin Lazas won the junior decathlon title Friday at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The Razorback freshman won the event with an American junior record total of 8,016 points. With his showing, he is now the No. 2 all-time performer in the decathlon using junior-size implements.

Trailing future teammate Gunnar Nixon entering the pole vault, Lazas went on to win the event and take the overall lead for good with two events remaining. He padded his lead with a win in the javelin, his third victory of the day. Lazas posted a personal-best mark of 194-9, nearly two feet better than his throw earlier this month at the NCAA Championships. Overall, Lazas won five of the 10 events over the two-day competition.

Nixon, a 2011-12 signee for Arkansas, finished second in the junior decathlon with 7,748 points, the national high school record for the event with junior implements. With his latest performance, Nixon now owns three high school records-high school implements (8,035), junior implements (7,748) and international implements (7,577)-in the decathlon, all set this season.

Lazas and Nixon now have the opportunity to move on to represent their country. The USA Junior Championships serve as the selection meet for the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships, which will be held July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla. The top two finishers in each event in Eugene are invited to compete as members of Team USA.
