FAYETTEVILLE — The 25th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team returns to action Friday-Sunday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.
One of the premier women’s collegiate events in the nation, Arkansas faces one of the toughest fields this spring with several Southeastern Conference teams scheduled to attend.
“This is a good SEC preview for us,” said assistant coach Shauna Estes. “We’ll have a chance to see a lot of familiar faces at this tournament.”
Arkansas has had an up-and-down spring at times playing well and, at times, carding numbers larger than the staff would like.
But the Lady Razorbacks are coming off a solid performance at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in which the top two golfers stepped up with good rounds.
Junior all-American Stacy Lewis finished second overall while sophomore Lucy Nunn posted a career-best finish tying for sixth in the field.
“We’re still trying to figure out our fifth spot for the post season,” said Estes of the rest of the team. “We are still posting some big numbers and we need to get better with some course management. Stacy is playing really well right now and that’s what we would expect of a player with her experience. Lucy is also hitting the ball well. She’s right where she needs to be.”
Also traveling this week for Arkansas is junior Ashley Medders, freshman transfer Kristin Ingram and freshmen Alex Schulte and Corinna Rees, one of whom will compete as an individual.
Schulte is still recovering from a sprained wrist suffered in competition last week and is listed as day-to-day.
“Kristin has been a nice addition to our squad,” said Estes of the semester transfer. “We’re making a swing change with her right now but she’s adjusting pretty well.”
Although the collegiate season continues through the end of May, the Lady Razorbacks find the spring beginning to wind down with just one more regular season event, the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic April 8-9, before the SEC Championship. Mississippi State hosts the league tournament at Old Waverly in West Point, Miss., April 20-22.
