Jump to results BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — When you’re hot, you’re hot and University of Arkansas junior Stacy Lewis must feel like she’s on fire carding an opening round 67 to lead the 92nd Women’s Southern Amateur Championship at Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., Monday. Lewis is coming off Arkansas’ first-ever NCAA Championship where she posted a final round 66 to win the individual title. After a week off from competition, Lewis responded with a first-round 67. Teammates Lucy Nunn and Alexandrea Schulte are also playing at the event and both shot 78 in the first round. Lewis is one of 33 collegiate golfers and coaches entered in the field with competition scheduled for June 4-8. Monday began with an 18-hole qualifier with the top 32 players advancing to match play beginning Tuesday with a 36-hole final on Friday. Lewis finished as the runner-up at last year’s event falling to University of Georgia’s Taylor Leon, a player Lewis goes head-to-head with both in the collegiate and amateur circles. Lewis led by three with five holes to play in the 36-hole final but Leon rallied squaring the match with three consecutive birdies. Leon took the lead with an 80-yard wedge shot from the fairway for an eagle that would prove to be the match winner. More than half of the 2007 Southern field hails from the Southeastern Conference. The SEC sends 18 players and coaches to this year’s event.
