Lewis eighth; Lady'Backs 11th in preseason poll
Jump to poll FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas women’s golf team was selected 11th in Golfweek’s preseason poll while sophomore Stacy Lewis was picked eighth. “It’s great recognition for our program and players and the accomplishments of last season,” said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. “We’ve made tremendous strides recently and I’m very proud of where we are and of what this ranking represents.” Coming off a record-setting season in 2004-05, Arkansas makes its highest appearance in a preseason poll in the 11-year history of the program. The Lady Razorbacks were one of seven Southeastern Conference teams selected in the top 30. "I don’t put a lot of weight in a preseason poll,” Hester added. "We know that it’s mostly based on what teams and players did last year and that we have to re-establish ourselves again this year." Lewis became the program’s inaugural first-team all-SEC selection this year after winning the league’s individual title. Also named SEC Freshman of the Year, Lewis went on to capture National Golf Coaches Association All-American honors as well. "I’m especially proud of Stacy being ranked eighth," Hester continued. "She has worked so hard for everything and she deserves this honor. I was a little surprised that Amanda (McCurdy) and Courtney (Mahon) weren’t mentioned in the rankings as well. I really think they are players to keep an eye on this year." Arkansas’ 11th-place ranking is a milestone for the Lady Razorback program but still demonstrates the challenges awaiting the team on the links this year. Four other Southeastern Conference opponents are ranked ahead of Arkansas headlined by fourth-ranked Georgia and No. 5 Auburn. Florida checks in in the No. 9 spot followed by 10th-ranked Tennessee. LSU is ranked 15th in the preseason polls, with Vanderbilt coming in No. 29, to round out the top 30. The Lady Razorback golf team opens the 2005-06 season Sept. 23-25, at the Mason Rudolph Championship and hosts their lone home event, the Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational, at Pinnacle Country Club, Oct. 16-18.
