Lewis Leads Lady'Backs at Liz
Jump toagate FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas freshman Stacy Lewis picked up where she left off leading the Lady Razorbacks and the rest of the field with a first round 72 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., Friday. Lewis, who earned medalist honors in Arkansas’ last outing at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin, Texas, last week, carded a 72 tying host Georgia’s Lisa Taylor and Wake Forest’s Ashley Hoagland for the lead. As a team the Lady Razorbacks find themselves in sixth place overall with a first day 306, just eight strokes out of the lead in the tight 18-team field. “Stacy continues to play well,” said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. “The greens were very fast today but I think we can improve our putting tomorrow and move up a couple spots.” The Lady Razorbacks are in the home stretch of a long spring with one regular season event remaining before the Southeastern Conference Championships. The Liz Murphey serves as a bit of an SEC preview with 11 of the 12 member institutions in attendance. Currently, the Lady Razorbacks trail the host Bulldogs who opened with s 298 on their home course. LSU is second with a 300, followed by Tulane and Wake Forest in a tie for third with 301. Auburn in fifth with a 304, followed by Arkansas’ 306. Ohio State is seventh at 307, Florida State checks in eight with a 308, Mississippi State is ninth with 309 and Tennessee is in 10th place with a 311. Junior Courtney Mahon stepped up for the Lady Razorbacks with a 77 to tie for 28th overall. Hot Springs, Ark., senior Gena Johnson posted a 78 and is tied for 39th overall. El Dorado, Ark., junior Amanda McCurdy counted a 79 and is tied for 51st while junior Lindsey Hinshaw posted an 83 and is tied for 78th overall. “Courtney felt like she could play better,” said Hester, “and I think her score will be even better tomorrow. Amanda was six over through the first nine but really settled in on the back.” Play continues both Saturday and Sunday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
