Lewis leads the USA to a 4-2 in the first round of the Curtis Cup

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Former University of Arkansas golfer Stacy Lewis and her teammates paced the United States to a 4-2 lead after first day action of the 2008 Curtis Cup Match at St. Andrews, Scotland, Friday. Lewis paired with Alison Walshe of Westford, Mass., in one of the morning foursomes playing alternate shot. The duo were two-down to Elizabeth Bennett of England and Jodi Ewart of Scotland after five holes but rallied for a 3-and-1 win. Lewis teamed with Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst winning the USA’s final point of the day with a 3-and-1 victory over Bennett and Florentyna Parker in the afternoon’s four-ball matches. Blumenherst and Tiffany Joh of UCLA picked up a 1-up win in the morning as well. “I did have very high expectations for both of them going into this, so I’m not at all surprised that they played well,” said USA team captain Carol Semple Thompson. “They (Lewis and Blumenherst) teamed well together this afternoon to come back from three down.” Saturday’s play again features three foursomes and three four-ball matches. All eight players for both teams move on to singles play on Sunday. The USA is a four-time winner of the bi-annual Curtis Cup and leads 4-2 after Friday’s play.
