Lewis Medders attempt to qualify

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas freshmen Stacy Lewis and Ashley Medders will both take part in a USGA-sanctioned Sectional Qualifier hoping to advance to the US Women’s Open later this month. Lewis, a redshirt freshman from The Woodlands, Texas, opened her collegiate golf career in style becoming the first Lady Razorback to earn National Golf Coaches Association All-America honors just weeks ago. Lewis is also the first Lady Razorback to earn the Southeastern Conference individual title, be on the SEC first-team and earn SEC Freshman of the Year honors. The banner first season could be capped off with a trip to the US Open in Cherry Hills, Colo., if she can make the cut in this second qualifier. She carded a 77 at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash., the week after the NCAA Championship and now competes in her home state at Champions Golf Club in Houston to move on. Medders, who saw limited action as a Lady’Back this season, posted a78 at Deerwood Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla., that same week in her first-round qualifer. She advances to the Sectional Qualifier in Baltimore this weekend. Junior Amanda McCurdy has already qualified for this year’s US Women’s Open after finishing as a runner-up at last year’s US Amateur in Erie, Pa.
