Lewis opens with 67 at OU

NORMAN, Okla. – University of Arkansas junior Stacy Lewis blistered the par 72, 6,0-13-yard Jimmie Austin Golf Course with a five-under 67 in first round action at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla., Sunday. Lewis’ near record 67 put the Woodlands, Texas, native in a tie for second place with the second round still to be played Sunday night. Although Lewis’ 67 is a shinning moment for the Lady Razorbacks, Texas Tech’s Ulrika van Niekerk played one better carding a course and tournament record 66 bettering the previous record of 67 held by Tulsa’s Nancy Lopez and set in 1976. Lewis’ round helped the 24th-ranked Lady Razorbacks to fifth place after the first round. Arkansas finished the morning session with a 292, 10 strokes behind Baylor who opened with a 282. Southern Methodist came off the course in second with 287 followed by host Oklahoma with a 289 and Tulsa with a 291. Arkansas is three strokes better than Kansas State who counted 295 in the first round. Lady’Back freshman Kristin Ingram also turned in a great round with a 74 and was tied for 26th overall. Sophomore Lucy Nunn carded a 75 and was tied for 37th while freshman Alex Schulte is tied for 51st with a 76. Junior Ashley Medders opened with a 78 and is tied for 69th while junior Whitney Sylvan, playing as an individual, is tied for 76th with a 79.
